Percent and Percentage

The word CENT means hundred.
∴ The word percent means, per hundred. The notation for percent is ‘%’

TO EXPRESS ONE QUANTITY AS A PERCENT OF THE OTHER

STEPS
Form the fraction with the number to be compared as numerator and the number with which to be compared as denominator.
Multiply the fraction obtained by 100 and at the same time write the percent sign

Example 1
Express 40 p as a percent of Rs 6
Solution: fraction = 40 p/600 p [1Re =100 p]
= 1/15×100% = 20/3%

TO FIND PERCENTAGE OF A QUANTITY

Example 2
In a class of 50 children, 10% are taking part in dramatics. How many children are not taking part?
Solution:
10% of 50 = 10/100×50=5
∴ 5 children are taking part. So 50 – 5 = 45 are not taking part


TO FIND PERCENTAGE OF A GIVEN QUANTITY

Express the given percent as fraction and multiply by the given number
Example 3: 25% 0f Rs 500
Solution = 25 / 100 *500 =Rs 125
